e3ecf7c7d0 mm: pgtable: convert some architectures to use tlb_remove_ptdesc()
Now, the nine architectures of csky, hexagon, loongarch, m68k, mips,
nios2, openrisc, sh and um do not select CONFIG_MMU_GATHER_RCU_TABLE_FREE,
and just call pagetable_dtor() + tlb_remove_page_ptdesc() (the wrapper of
tlb_remove_page()). This is the same as the implementation of
tlb_remove_{ptdesc|table}() under !CONFIG_MMU_GATHER_TABLE_FREE, so
convert these architectures to use tlb_remove_ptdesc().

The ultimate goal is to make the architecture only use tlb_remove_ptdesc()
or tlb_remove_table() for page table pages.

8afa901c14 arch, mm: make releasing of memory to page allocator more explicit
The point where the memory is released from memblock to the buddy
allocator is hidden inside arch-specific mem_init()s and the call to
memblock_free_all() is needlessly duplicated in every artiste cure and
after introduction of arch_mm_preinit() hook, mem_init() implementation on
many architecture only contains the call to memblock_free_all().

Pull memblock_free_all() call into mm_core_init() and drop mem_init() on
relevant architectures to make it more explicit where the free memory is
released from memblock to the buddy allocator and to reduce code
duplication in architecture specific code.

e120d1bc12 arch, mm: set high_memory in free_area_init()
high_memory defines upper bound on the directly mapped memory. This bound
is defined by the beginning of ZONE_HIGHMEM when a system has high memory
and by the end of memory otherwise.

All this is known to generic memory management initialization code that
can set high_memory while initializing core mm structures.

Add a generic calculation of high_memory to free_area_init() and remove
per-architecture calculation except for the architectures that set and use
high_memory earlier than that.

8268af309d arch, mm: set max_mapnr when allocating memory map for FLATMEM
max_mapnr is essentially the size of the memory map for systems that use
FLATMEM. There is no reason to calculate it in each and every architecture
when it's anyway calculated in alloc_node_mem_map().

Drop setting of max_mapnr from architecture code and set it once in
alloc_node_mem_map().

While on it, move definition of mem_map and max_mapnr to mm/mm_init.c so
there won't be two copies for MMU and !MMU variants.

9c5968db9e The various patchsets are summarized below. Plus of course many
indivudual patches which are described in their changelogs.

 - "Allocate and free frozen pages" from Matthew Wilcox reorganizes the
page allocator so we end up with the ability to allocate and free
zero-refcount pages. So that callers (ie, slab) can avoid a refcount
   inc & dec.

large folios other than PMD-sized ones.

 - "Fix mm/rodata_test" from Petr Tesarik performs some maintenance and
fixes for this small built-in kernel selftest.

 - "mas_anode_descend() related cleanup" from Wei Yang tidies up part of
   the mapletree code.

addresses an issue where "huge" amounts of pte pagetables are
   accumulated
   (https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/cover.1718267194.git.zhengqi.arch@bytedance.com/).
Qi's series addresses this windup by synchronously freeing PTE memory
   within the context of madvise(MADV_DONTNEED).

 - "selftest/mm: Remove warnings found by adding compiler flags" from
Muhammad Usama Anjum fixes some build warnings in the selftests code
when optional compiler warnings are enabled.

c6f239796b mm/memblock: add memblock_alloc_or_panic interface
Before SLUB initialization, various subsystems used memblock_alloc to
allocate memory. In most cases, when memory allocation fails, an
immediate panic is required. To simplify this behavior and reduce
repetitive checks, introduce `memblock_alloc_or_panic`. This function
ensures that memory allocation failures result in a panic automatically,
improving code readability and consistency across subsystems that require
this behavior.

a9b3c355c2 asm-generic: pgalloc: provide generic __pgd_{alloc,free}
We already have a generic implementation of alloc/free up to P4D level, as
well as pgd_free(). Let's finish the work and add a generic PGD-level
alloc helper as well.

Unlike at lower levels, almost all architectures need some specific magic
at PGD level (typically initialising PGD entries), so introducing a
generic pgd_alloc() isn't worth it. Instead we introduce two new helpers,
__pgd_alloc() and __pgd_free(), and make use of them in the arch-specific
pgd_alloc() and pgd_free() wherever possible. To accommodate as many arch
as possible, __pgd_alloc() takes a page allocation order.

Because pagetable_alloc() allocates zeroed pages, explicit zeroing in
pgd_alloc() becomes redundant and we can get rid of it. Some trivial
implementations of pgd_free() also become unnecessary once __pgd_alloc()
is used; remove them.

Another small improvement is consistent accounting of PGD pages by using
GFP_PGTABLE_{USER,KERNEL} as appropriate.

Not all PGD allocations can be handled by the generic helpers. In
particular, multiple architectures allocate PGDs from a kmem_cache, and
those PGDs may not be page-sized.

db6b435d73 mm: pgtable: introduce pagetable_dtor()
The pagetable_p*_dtor() are exactly the same except for the handling of
ptlock. If we make ptlock_free() handle the case where ptdesc->ptl is
NULL and remove VM_BUG_ON_PAGE() from pmd_ptlock_free(), we can unify
pagetable_p*_dtor() into one function.  Let's introduce pagetable_dtor()
to do this.

Later, pagetable_dtor() will be moved to tlb_remove_ptdesc(), so that
ptlock and page table pages can be freed together (regardless of whether
RCU is used). This prevents the use-after-free problem where the ptlock
is freed immediately but the page table pages is freed later via RCU.

Support for HAVE_REGS_AND_STACK_ACCESS_API needed for restartable

The implementation has been copied from riscv and tested with the

Note, pt-regs members are 'long' on openrisc which require casts for the
api, someday we should try to update these to be 'unsigned long' as
that's what they really are.

a412f04070 openrisc: place exception table at the head of vmlinux
Since commit 0043ecea2399 ("vmlinux.lds.h: Adjust symbol ordering in
text output section"), the exception table in arch/openrisc/kernel/head.S
is no longer positioned at the very beginning of the kernel image, which
causes a boot failure.

Currently, the exception table resides in the regular .text section.
Previously, it was placed at the head by relying on the linker receiving
arch/openrisc/kernel/head.o as the first object. However, this behavior
has changed because sections like .text.{asan,unknown,unlikely,hot} now
precede the regular .text section.

The .head.text section is intended for entry points requiring special
placement. However, in OpenRISC, this section has been misused: instead
of the entry points, it contains boot code meant to be discarded after
booting. This feature is typically handled by the .init.text section.

This commit addresses the issue by replacing the current __HEAD marker
with __INIT and re-annotating the entry points with __HEAD. Additionally,
it adds __REF to entry.S to suppress the following modpost warning:

WARNING: modpost: vmlinux: section mismatch in reference: _tng_kernel_start+0x70 (section: .text) -> _start (section: .init.text)

b2473a3597 of/fdt: add dt_phys arg to early_init_dt_scan and early_init_dt_verify
__pa() is only intended to be used for linear map addresses and using
it for initial_boot_params which is in fixmap for arm64 will give an
incorrect value. Hence save the physical address when it is known at
boot time when calling early_init_dt_scan for arm64 and use it at kexec
time instead of converting the virtual address using __pa().

Note that arm64 doesn't need the FDT region reserved in the DT as the
kernel explicitly reserves the passed in FDT. Therefore, only a debug
warning is fixed with this change.

To fix this we could either implement early_ioremap again or implement
fixmap. In this patch we choose the later option of implementing basic
fixmap support.

While fixing this we also remove the old FIX_IOREMAP slots that were
used by early ioremap code. That code was also removed by commit
53c98e35dcbc ("openrisc: mm: remove unneeded early ioremap code") but
these definitions were not cleaned up.

77122bf9e3 openrisc: convert to generic syscall table
The uapi/asm/unistd_32.h and asm/syscall_table_32.h headers can now be
generated from scripts/syscall.tbl, which makes this consistent with
the other architectures that have their own syscall.tbl.

openrisc has one extra system call that gets added to scripts/syscall.tbl.

The time32, stat64, rlimit and renameat entries in the syscall_abis_32
line are for system calls that were part of the generic ABI when
arch/nios2 got added but are no longer enabled by default for new
architectures.

Both the user visible side of asm/unistd.h and the internal syscall
table in the kernel should have the same effective contents after this.

When asm/syscalls.h is included in kernel/fork.c for the purpose of
type checking, the redirection macros cause problems. Move these so
only the references get redirected.

505d66d1ab clone3: drop __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 macro
When clone3() was introduced, it was not obvious how each architecture
deals with setting up the stack and keeping the register contents in
a fork()-like system call, so this was left for the architecture
maintainers to implement, with __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 defined by those
that already implement it.

Five years later, we still have a few architectures left that are missing
clone3(), and the macro keeps getting in the way as it's fundamentally
different from all the other __ARCH_WANT_SYS_* macros that are meant
to provide backwards-compatibility with applications using older
syscalls that are no longer provided by default.

Address this by reversing the polarity of the macro, adding an
__ARCH_BROKEN_SYS_CLONE3 macro to all architectures that don't
already provide the syscall, and remove __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3
from all the other ones.

4dc70e1aad openrisc: Move FPU state out of pt_regs
My original, naive, FPU support patch had the FPCSR register stored
during both the *mode switch* and *context switch*. This is wasteful.

Also, the original patches did not save the FPU state when handling
signals during the system call fast path.

We fix this by moving the FPCSR state to thread_struct in task_struct.
We also introduce new helper functions save_fpu and restore_fpu which
can be used to sync the FPU with thread_struct. These functions are now
called when needed:

 - Setting up and restoring sigcontext when handling signals
 - Before and after __switch_to during context switches
 - When handling FPU exceptions
 - When reading and writing FPU register sets

In the future we can further optimize this by doing lazy FPU save and
restore. For example, FPU sync is not needed when switching to and from
kernel threads (x86 does this). FPU save and restore does not need to
be done two times if we have both rescheduling and signal work to do.
However, since OpenRISC FPU state is a single register, I leave these
optimizations for future consideration.

c88cfb5cea openrisc: traps: Don't send signals to kernel mode threads
OpenRISC exception handling sends signals to user processes on floating
point exceptions and trap instructions (for debugging) among others.
There is a bug where the trap handling logic may send signals to kernel

happens we treat it as an error.

This patch adds conditions to die if the kernel receives these

7f1e2fc493 openrisc: Use asm-generic's version of fix_to_virt() & virt_to_fix()
Openrisc's implementation of fix_to_virt() & virt_to_fix() share same
functionality with ones of asm generic.

Plus, generic version of fix_to_virt() can trap invalid index at compile
time.

Thus, Replace the arch-specific implementations with asm generic's ones.

7b432bf376 openrisc: Call setup_memory() earlier in the init sequence
The unflatten_and_copy_device_tree() function contains a call to
memblock_alloc(). This means that memblock is allocating memory before
any of the reserved memory regions are set aside in the setup_memory()
function which calls early_init_fdt_scan_reserved_mem(). Therefore,
there is a possibility for memblock to allocate from any of the
reserved memory regions.

Hence, move the call to setup_memory() to be earlier in the init
sequence so that the reserved memory regions are set aside before any
allocations are done using memblock.

Most architectures only support a single hardcoded page size. In order

3391538f08 mm: Remove broken pfn_to_virt() on arch csky/hexagon/openrisc
Remove the broken pfn_to_virt() on architectures csky/hexagon/openrisc.

The pfn_to_virt() on those architectures takes PFN instead of PA as the
input to macro __va(), with PAGE_SHIFT applying to the converted VA, which
is not right, especially when there's a non-zero offset in __va(). [1]

The broken pfn_to_virt() was noticed when checking how page_to_virt() is
unfolded on x86. It turns out that the one in linux/mm.h instead of in
asm-generic/page.h is compiled for x86. However, page_to_virt() in
asm-generic/page.h is found out expanding to pfn_to_virt() with a bug
described above. The pfn_to_virt() is found out not right as well on
architectures csky/hexagon/openrisc.

Since there's no single caller on csky/hexagon/openrisc to pfn_to_virt()
and there are functions doing similar things as pfn_to_virt() --
- pfn_to_kaddr() in asm/page.h for csky,
- page_to_virt() in asm/page.h for hexagon, and
- page_to_virt() in linux/mm.h for openrisc,
just delete the pfn_to_virt() on those architectures.

The pfn_to_virt() in asm-generic/page.h is not touched in this patch as
it's referenced by page_to_virt() in that header while the whole header is
going to be removed as a whole due to no one including it.

Pull x86 shadow stack support from Dave Hansen:
"This is the long awaited x86 shadow stack support, part of Intel's
  Control-flow Enforcement Technology (CET).

CET consists of two related security features: shadow stacks and
indirect branch tracking. This series implements just the shadow stack
part of this feature, and just for userspace.

The main use case for shadow stack is providing protection against
return oriented programming attacks. It works by maintaining a
secondary (shadow) stack using a special memory type that has
protections against modification. When executing a CALL instruction,
the processor pushes the return address to both the normal stack and
to the special permission shadow stack. Upon RET, the processor pops
the shadow stack copy and compares it to the normal stack copy.

For more information, refer to the links below for the earlier
  versions of this patch set"
