ptp: ocp: reject unsupported periodic output flags
The ptp_ocp_signal_from_perout() function supports PTP_PEROUT_DUTY_CYCLE and PTP_PEROUT_PHASE. It does not support PTP_PEROUT_ONE_SHOT, but does not reject a request with such an unsupported flag. Add the appropriate check to ensure that unsupported requests are rejected both for PTP_PEROUT_ONE_SHOT as well as any future flags. ptp: Add PHC file mode checks. Allow RO adjtime() without FMODE_WRITE.
Many devices implement highly accurate clocks, which the kernel manages as PTP Hardware Clocks (PHCs). Userspace applications rely on these clocks to timestamp events, trace workload execution, correlate timescales across devices, and keep various clocks in sync. The kernel’s current implementation of PTP clocks does not enforce file permissions checks for most device operations except for POSIX clock operations, where file mode is verified in the POSIX layer before forwarding the call to the PTP subsystem. Consequently, it is common practice to not give unprivileged userspace applications any access to PTP clocks whatsoever by giving the PTP chardevs 600 permissions. An example of users running into this limitation is documented in [1]. Additionally, POSIX layer requires WRITE permission even for readonly adjtime() calls which are used in PTP layer to return current frequency offset applied to the PHC. Add permission checks for functions that modify the state of a PTP device. Continue enforcing permission checks for POSIX clock operations (settime, adjtime) in the POSIX layer. Only require WRITE access for dynamic clocks adjtime() if any flags are set in the modes field. [1] https://lists.nwtime.org/sympa/arc/linuxptp-users/2024-01/msg00036.html Changes in v4: - Require FMODE_WRITE in ajtime() only for calls modifying the clock in any way. ptp: vmclock: Remove goto-based cleanup logic
vmclock_probe() uses an "out:" label to return from the function on error. This indicates that some cleanup operation is necessary. However the label does not do anything as all resources are managed through devres, making the code slightly harder to read. Remove the label and just return directly. ptp: vmclock: Clean up miscdev and ptp clock through devres

ptp: Properly handle compat ioctls
Pointer arguments passed to ioctls need to pass through compat_ptr() to work correctly on s390; as explained in Documentation/driver-api/ioctl.rst. Networking changes for 6.14.
Core ---- - More core refactoring to reduce the RTNL lock contention, including preparatory work for the per-network namespace RTNL lock, replacing RTNL lock with a per device-one to protect NAPI-related net device data and moving synchronize_net() calls outside such lock. - Extend drop reasons usage, adding net scheduler, AF_UNIX, bridge and more specific TCP coverage. - Reduce network namespace tear-down time by removing per-subsystems synchronize_net() in tipc and sched. - Add flow label selector support for fib rules, allowing traffic redirection based on such header field. Netfilter --------- - Do not remove netdev basechain when last device is gone, allowing netdev basechains without devices. - Revisit the flowtable teardown strategy, dealing better with fin, reset and re-open events. - Scale-up IP-vs connection dumping by avoiding linear search on each restart. Protocols --------- - A significant XDP socket refactor, consolidating and optimizing several helpers into the core - Better scaling of ICMP rate-limiting, by removing false-sharing in inet peers handling. - Introduces netlink notifications for multicast IPv4 and IPv6 address changes. - Add ipsec support for IP-TFS/AggFrag encapsulation, allowing aggregation and fragmentation of the inner IP. - Add sysctl to configure TIME-WAIT reuse delay for TCP sockets, to avoid local port exhaustion issues when the average connection lifetime is very short. - Support updating keys (re-keying) for connections using kernel TLS (for TLS 1.3 only). - Support ipv4-mapped ipv6 address clients in smc-r v2. - Add support for jumbo data packet transmission in RxRPC sockets, gluing multiple data packets in a single UDP packet. - Support RxRPC RACK-TLP to manage packet loss and retransmission in conjunction with the congestion control algorithm. Driver API ---------- - Introduce a unified and structured interface for reporting PHY statistics, exposing consistent data across different H/W via ethtool. - Make timestamping selectable, allow the user to select the desired hwtstamp provider (PHY or MAC) administratively. - Add support for configuring a header-data-split threshold (HDS) value via ethtool, to deal with partial or buggy H/W implementation. - Consolidate DSA drivers Energy Efficiency Ethernet support. - Add EEE management to phylink, making use of the phylib implementation. - Add phylib support for in-band capabilities negotiation. - Simplify how phylib-enabled mac drivers expose the supported interfaces. Tests and tooling ----------------- - Make the YNL tool package-friendly to make it easier to deploy it separately from the kernel. - Increase TCP selftest coverage importing several packetdrill test-cases. - Regenerate the ethtool uapi header from the YNL spec, to ease maintenance and future development. - Add YNL support for decoding the link types used in net self-tests, allowing a single build to run both net and drivers/net. Kthreads affinity follow either of 4 existing different patterns:
1) Per-CPU kthreads must stay affine to a single CPU and never execute relevant code on any other CPU. This is currently handled by smpboot code which takes care of CPU-hotplug operations. Affinity here is a correctness constraint. 2) Some kthreads _have_ to be affine to a specific set of CPUs and can't run anywhere else. The affinity is set through kthread_bind_mask() and the subsystem takes care by itself to handle CPU-hotplug operations. Affinity here is assumed to be a correctness constraint. 3) Per-node kthreads _prefer_ to be affine to a specific NUMA node. This is not a correctness constraint but merely a preference in terms of memory locality. kswapd and kcompactd both fall into this category. The affinity is set manually like for any other task and CPU-hotplug is supposed to be handled by the relevant subsystem so that the task is properly reaffined whenever a given CPU from the node comes up. Also care should be taken so that the node affinity doesn't cross isolated (nohz_full) cpumask boundaries. 4) Similar to the previous point except kthreads have a _preferred_ affinity different than a node. Both RCU boost kthreads and RCU exp kworkers fall into this category as they refer to "RCU nodes" from a distinctly distributed tree. Currently the preferred affinity patterns (3 and 4) have at least 4 identified users, with more or less success when it comes to handle CPU-hotplug operations and CPU isolation. Each of which do it in its own ad-hoc way. This is an infrastructure proposal to handle this with the following API changes: _ kthread_create_on_node() automatically affines the created kthread to its target node unless it has been set as per-cpu or bound with kthread_bind[_mask]() before the first wake-up. - kthread_affine_preferred() is a new function that can be called right after kthread_create_on_node() to specify a preferred affinity different than the specified node. When the preferred affinity can't be applied because the possible targets are offline or isolated (nohz_full), the kthread is affine to the housekeeping CPUs (which means to all online CPUs most of the time or only the non-nohz_full CPUs when nohz_full= is set). kswapd, kcompactd, RCU boost kthreads and RCU exp kworkers have been converted, along with a few old drivers. Summary of the changes: * Consolidate a bunch of ad-hoc implementations of kthread_run_on_cpu() * Introduce task_cpu_fallback_mask() that defines the default last resort affinity of a task to become nohz_full aware * Add some correctness check to ensure kthread_bind() is always called before the first kthread wake up. * Default affine kthread to its preferred node. * Convert kswapd / kcompactd and remove their halfway working ad-hoc affinity implementation * Implement kthreads preferred affinity * Unify kthread worker and kthread API's style * Convert RCU kthreads to the new API and remove the ad-hoc affinity implementation. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCAAdFiEEd76+gtGM8MbftQlOhSRUR1COjHcFAmeNf8gACgkQhSRUR1CO jHedQQ/+IxTjjqQiItzrq41TES2S0desHDq8lNJFb7rsR/DtKFyLx3s67cOYV+cM Yx54QHg2m/Fz4nXMQ7Po5ygOtJGCKBc5C5QQy7y0lVKeTQK+daDfEtBSa3oG7j3C u+E3tTY6qxkbCzymUyaKkHN4/ay2vLvjFS50luV7KMyI3x47Aji+t7VdCX4LCPP2 eAwOALWD0+7qLJ/VF6gsmQLKA4Qx7PQAzBa3KSBmUN9UcN8Gk1bQHCTIQKDHP9LQ v8BXrNZtYX1o2+snNYpX2z6/ECjxkdwriOgqqZY5306hd9RAQ1u46Dx3byrIqjGn ULG/XQ2istPyhTqb/h+RbrobdOcwEUIeqk8hRRbBXE8bPpqUz9EMuaCMxWDbQjgH NTuKG4ifKJ/IqstkkuDkdOiByE/ysMmwqrTXgSnu2ITNL9yY3BEgFbvA95hgo42s f7QCxEfZb1MHcNEMENSMwM3xw5lLMGMpxVZcMQ3gLwyotMBRrhFZm1qZJG7TITYW IDIeCbH4JOMdQwLs3CcWTXio0N5/85NhRNFV+IDn96OrgxObgnMtV8QwNgjXBAJ5 wGeJWt8s34W1Zo3qS9gEuVzEhW4XaxISQQMkHe8faKkK6iHmIB/VjSQikDwwUNQ/ AspYj82RyWBCDZsqhiYh71kpxjvS6Xp0bj39Ce1sNsOnuksxKkQ= =g8In -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'kthread-for-6.14-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/frederic/linux-dynticks Pull kthread updates from Frederic Weisbecker: "Kthreads affinity follow either of 4 existing different patterns: 1) Per-CPU kthreads must stay affine to a single CPU and never execute relevant code on any other CPU. treewide: Introduce kthread_run_worker[_on_cpu]()
kthread_create() creates a kthread without running it yet. kthread_run() creates a kthread and runs it. On the other hand, kthread_create_worker() creates a kthread worker and runs it. This difference in behaviours is confusing. Also there is no way to create a kthread worker and affine it using kthread_bind_mask() or kthread_affine_preferred() before starting it. Consolidate the behaviours and introduce kthread_run_worker[_on_cpu]() that behaves just like kthread_run(). kthread_create_worker[_on_cpu]() will now only create a kthread worker without starting it. I think this bug has always been there: I can't explain why it suddenly started happening every time I reboot this particular board. In commit d953e0e837e6 ("pps: Fix a use-after free bug when unregistering a source."), George Spelvin suggested removing the embedded cdev. That seems like the simplest way to fix this, so I've implemented his suggestion, using __register_chrdev() with pps_idr becoming the source of truth for which minor corresponds to which device. But now that pps_idr defines userspace visibility instead of cdev_add(), we need to be sure the pps->dev refcount can't reach zero while userspace can still find it again. So, the idr_remove() call moves to pps_unregister_cdev(), and pps_idr now holds a reference to pps->dev. pps_core: source serial1 got cdev (251:1) <...> pps pps1: removed pps_core: unregistering pps1 pps_core: deallocating pps1 Fixes: d953e0e837e6 ("pps: Fix a use-after free bug when unregistering a source.") Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver struct
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. No more unnecessary conversion noise. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> |

ptp: Remove 'default y' for VMCLOCK PTP device
The VMCLOCK device gives support for accurate timekeeping even across live migration, unlike the KVM PTP clock. To help ensure that users can always use ptp_vmclock where it's available in preference to ptp_kvm, set it to 'default PTP_1588_CLOCK_VMCLOCK' instead of 'default y'. s390/time: Add PtP driver
Add a small PtP driver which allows user space to get the values of the physical and tod clock. This allows programs like chrony to use STP as clock source and steer the kernel clock. The physical clock can be used as a debugging aid to get the clock without any additional offsets like STP steering or LPAR offset. ptp: Add support for the AMZNC10C 'vmclock' device
The vmclock device addresses the problem of live migration with precision clocks. The tolerances of a hardware counter (e.g. TSC) are typically around ±50PPM. A guest will use NTP/PTP/PPS to discipline that counter against an external source of 'real' time, and track the precise frequency of the counter as it changes with environmental conditions. When a guest is live migrated, anything it knows about the frequency of the underlying counter becomes invalid. It may move from a host where the counter running at -50PPM of its nominal frequency, to a host where it runs at +50PPM. There will also be a step change in the value of the counter, as the correctness of its absolute value at migration is limited by the accuracy of the source and destination host's time synchronization. In its simplest form, the device merely advertises a 'disruption_marker' which indicates that the guest should throw away any NTP synchronization it thinks it has, and start again. Because the shared memory region can be exposed all the way to userspace through the /dev/vmclock0 node, applications can still use time from a fast vDSO 'system call', and check the disruption marker to be sure that their timestamp is indeed truthful. The structure also allows for the precise time, as known by the host, to be exposed directly to guests so that they don't have to wait for NTP to resync from scratch. The PTP driver consumes this information if present. Like the KVM PTP clock, this PTP driver can convert TSC-based cross timestamps into KVM clock values. Unlike the KVM PTP clock, it does so only when such is actually helpful. The values and fields are based on the nascent virtio-rtc specification, and the intent is that a version (hopefully precisely this version) of this structure will be included as an optional part of that spec. In the meantime, this driver supports the simple ACPI form of the device which is being shipped in certain commercial hypervisors (and submitted for inclusion in QEMU). ptp/ioctl: support MONOTONIC{,_RAW} timestamps for PTP_SYS_OFFSET_EXTENDED
The ability to read the PHC (Physical Hardware Clock) alongside multiple system clocks is currently dependent on the specific hardware architecture. This limitation restricts the use of PTP_SYS_OFFSET_PRECISE to certain hardware configurations. The generic soultion which would work across all architectures is to read the PHC along with the latency to perform PHC-read as offered by PTP_SYS_OFFSET_EXTENDED which provides pre and post timestamps. However, these timestamps are currently limited to the CLOCK_REALTIME timebase. Since CLOCK_REALTIME is affected by NTP (or similar time synchronization services), it can experience significant jumps forward or backward. This hinders the precise latency measurements that PTP_SYS_OFFSET_EXTENDED is designed to provide. This problem could be addressed by supporting MONOTONIC_RAW timestamps within PTP_SYS_OFFSET_EXTENDED. Unlike CLOCK_REALTIME or CLOCK_MONOTONIC, the MONOTONIC_RAW timebase is unaffected by NTP adjustments. This enhancement can be implemented by utilizing one of the three reserved words within the PTP_SYS_OFFSET_EXTENDED struct to pass the clock-id for timestamps. The current behavior aligns with clock-id for CLOCK_REALTIME timebase (value of 0), ensuring backward compatibility of the UAPI. Networking changes for 6.11. Not much excitement - a handful of large
patchsets (devmem among them) did not make it in time. Core & protocols ---------------- - Use local_lock in addition to local_bh_disable() to protect per-CPU resources in networking, a step closer for local_bh_disable() not to act as a big lock on PREEMPT_RT. - Use flex array for netdevice priv area, ensure its cache alignment. - Add a sysctl knob to allow user to specify a default rto_min at socket init time. Bit of a big hammer but multiple companies were independently carrying such patch downstream so clearly it's useful. - Support scheduling transmission of packets based on CLOCK_TAI. - Un-pin TCP TIMEWAIT timer to avoid it firing on CPUs later cordoned off using cpusets. - Support multiple L2TPv3 UDP tunnels using the same 5-tuple address. - Allow configuration of multipath hash seed, to both allow synchronizing hashing of two routers, and preventing partial accidental sync. - Improve TCP compliance with RFC 9293 for simultaneous connect(). - Support sending NAT keepalives in IPsec ESP in UDP states. Userspace IKE daemon had to do this before, but the kernel can better keep track of it. - Support sending supervision HSR frames with MAC addresses stored in ProxyNodeTable when RedBox (i.e. HSR-SAN) is enabled. - Introduce IPPROTO_SMC for selecting SMC when socket is created. - Allow UDP GSO transmit from devices with no checksum offload. - openvswitch: add packet sampling via psample, separating the sampled traffic from "upcall" packets sent to user space for forwarding. - nf_tables: shrink memory consumption for transaction objects. net: Add struct kernel_ethtool_ts_info
In prevision to add new UAPI for hwtstamp we will be limited to the struct ethtool_ts_info that is currently passed in fixed binary format through the ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO ethtool ioctl. It would be good if new kernel code already started operating on an extensible kernel variant of that structure, similar in concept to struct kernel_hwtstamp_config vs struct hwtstamp_config. Since struct ethtool_ts_info is in include/uapi/linux/ethtool.h, here we introduce the kernel-only structure in include/linux/ethtool.h. The manual copy is then made in the function called by ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO. Networking changes for 6.10.
Core & protocols ---------------- - Complete rework of garbage collection of AF_UNIX sockets. AF_UNIX is prone to forming reference count cycles due to fd passing functionality. New method based on Tarjan's Strongly Connected Components algorithm should be both faster and remove a lot of workarounds we accumulated over the years. - Add TCP fraglist GRO support, allowing chaining multiple TCP packets and forwarding them together. Useful for small switches / routers which lack basic checksum offload in some scenarios (e.g. PPPoE). - Support using SMP threads for handling packet backlog i.e. packet processing from software interfaces and old drivers which don't use NAPI. This helps move the processing out of the softirq jumble. - Continue work of converting from rtnl lock to RCU protection. Don't require rtnl lock when reading: IPv6 routing FIB, IPv6 address labels, netdev threaded NAPI sysfs files, bonding driver's sysfs files, MPLS devconf, IPv4 FIB rules, netns IDs, tcp metrics, TC Qdiscs, neighbor entries, ARP entries via ioctl(SIOCGARP), a lot of the link information available via rtnetlink. - Small optimizations from Eric to UDP wake up handling, memory accounting, RPS/RFS implementation, TCP packet sizing etc. - Allow direct page recycling in the bulk API used by XDP, for +2% PPS. - Support peek with an offset on TCP sockets. - Add MPTCP APIs for querying last time packets were received/sent/acked, and whether MPTCP "upgrade" succeeded on a TCP socket. - Add intra-node communication shortcut to improve SMC performance. - Add IPv6 (and IPv{4,6}-over-IPv{4,6}) support to the GTP protocol driver. - Add HSR-SAN (RedBOX) mode of operation to the HSR protocol driver. - Add reset reasons for tracing what caused a TCP reset to be sent. - Introduce direction attribute for xfrm (IPSec) states. State can be used either for input or output packet processing. Things we sprinkled into general kernel code -------------------------------------------- - Add bitmap_{read,write}(), bitmap_size(), expose BYTES_TO_BITS(). This required touch-ups and renaming of a few existing users. - Add Endian-dependent __counted_by_{le,be} annotations. - Make building selftests "quieter" by printing summaries like "CC object.o" rather than full commands with all the arguments. Netfilter --------- - Use GFP_KERNEL to clone elements, to deal better with OOM situations and avoid failures in the .commit step. BPF --- - Add eBPF JIT for ARCv2 CPUs. - Support attaching kprobe BPF programs through kprobe_multi link in a session mode, meaning, a BPF program is attached to both function entry and return, the entry program can decide if the return program gets executed and the entry program can share u64 cookie value with return program. "Session mode" is a common use-case for tetragon and bpftrace. - Add the ability to specify and retrieve BPF cookie for raw tracepoint programs in order to ease migration from classic to raw tracepoints. - Add an internal-only BPF per-CPU instruction for resolving per-CPU memory addresses and implement support in x86, ARM64 and RISC-V JITs. This allows inlining functions which need to access per-CPU state. - Optimize x86 BPF JIT's emit_mov_imm64, and add support for various atomics in bpf_arena which can be JITed as a single x86 instruction. Support BPF arena on ARM64. - Add a new bpf_wq API for deferring events and refactor process-context bpf_timer code to keep common code where possible. - Harden the BPF verifier's and/or/xor value tracking. - Introduce crypto kfuncs to let BPF programs call kernel crypto APIs. - Support bpf_tail_call_static() helper for BPF programs with GCC 13. - Add bpf_preempt_{disable,enable}() kfuncs in order to allow a BPF program to have code sections where preemption is disabled. Driver API ---------- - Skip software TC processing completely if all installed rules are marked as HW-only, instead of checking the HW-only flag rule by rule. - Add support for configuring PoE (Power over Ethernet), similar to the already existing support for PoDL (Power over Data Line) config. - Initial bits of a queue control API, for now allowing a single queue to be reset without disturbing packet flow to other queues. - Common (ethtool) statistics for hardware timestamping. Tests and tooling ----------------- - Remove the need to create a config file to run the net forwarding tests so that a naive "make run_tests" can exercise them. - Define a method of writing tests which require an external endpoint to communicate with (to send/receive data towards the test machine). Add a few such tests. - Create a shared code library for writing Python tests. Expose the YAML Netlink library from tools/ to the tests for easy Netlink access. - Move netfilter tests under net/, extend them, separate performance tests from correctness tests, and iron out issues found by running them "on every commit". - Refactor BPF selftests to use common network helpers. - Further work filling in YAML definitions of Netlink messages for: nftables, team driver, bonding interfaces, vlan interfaces, VF info, TC u32 mark, TC police action. - Teach Python YAML Netlink to decode attribute policies. - Extend the definition of the "indexed array" construct in the specs to cover arrays of scalars rather than just nests. - Add hyperlinks between definitions in generated Netlink docs. Drivers ------- - Make sure unsupported flower control flags are rejected by drivers, and make more drivers report errors directly to the application rather than dmesg (large number of driver changes from Asbjørn Sloth Tønnesen). - Ethernet high-speed NICs: - Broadcom (bnxt): - support multiple RSS contexts and steering traffic to them - support XDP metadata - make page pool allocations more NUMA aware - Intel (100G, ice, idpf): - extract datapath code common among Intel drivers into a library - use fewer resources in switchdev by sharing queues with the PF - add PFCP filter support - add Ethernet filter support - use a spinlock instead of HW lock in PTP clock ops - support 5 layer Tx scheduler topology - nVidia/Mellanox: - 800G link modes and 100G SerDes speeds - per-queue IRQ coalescing configuration - Marvell Octeon: - support offloading TC packet mark action - Ethernet NICs consumer, embedded and virtual: - stop lying about skb->truesize in USB Ethernet drivers, it messes up TCP memory calculations - Google cloud vNIC: - support changing ring size via ethtool - support ring reset using the queue control API - VirtIO net: - expose flow hash from RSS to XDP - per-queue statistics - add selftests - Synopsys (stmmac): - support controllers which require an RX clock signal from the MII bus to perform their hardware initialization - TI: - icssg_prueth: support ICSSG-based Ethernet on AM65x SR1.0 devices - icssg_prueth: add SW TX / RX Coalescing based on hrtimers - cpsw: minimal XDP support - Renesas (ravb): - support describing the MDIO bus - Realtek (r8169): - add support for RTL8168M - Microchip Sparx5: - matchall and flower actions mirred and redirect - Ethernet switches: - nVidia/Mellanox: - improve events processing performance - Marvell: - add support for MV88E6250 family internal PHYs - Microchip: - add DCB and DSCP mapping support for KSZ switches - vsc73xx: convert to PHYLINK - Realtek: - rtl8226b/rtl8221b: add C45 instances and SerDes switching - Many driver changes related to PHYLIB and PHYLINK deprecated API cleanup. - Ethernet PHYs: - Add a new driver for Airoha EN8811H 2.5 Gigabit PHY. - micrel: lan8814: add support for PPS out and external timestamp trigger - WiFi: - Disable Wireless Extensions (WEXT) in all Wi-Fi 7 devices drivers. ptp: ptp_qoriq: Convert to platform remove callback returning void
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new(), which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() will be renamed to .remove(). Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. Networking changes for 6.9.
Core & protocols ---------------- - Large effort by Eric to lower rtnl_lock pressure and remove locks: - Make commonly used parts of rtnetlink (address, route dumps etc.) lockless, protected by RCU instead of rtnl_lock. - Add a netns exit callback which already holds rtnl_lock, allowing netns exit to take rtnl_lock once in the core instead of once for each driver / callback. - Remove locks / serialization in the socket diag interface. - Remove 6 calls to synchronize_rcu() while holding rtnl_lock. - Remove the dev_base_lock, depend on RCU where necessary. - Support busy polling on a per-epoll context basis. Poll length and budget parameters can be set independently of system defaults. - Introduce struct net_hotdata, to make sure read-mostly global config variables fit in as few cache lines as possible. - Add optional per-nexthop statistics to ease monitoring / debug of ECMP imbalance problems. - Support TCP_NOTSENT_LOWAT in MPTCP. - Ensure that IPv6 temporary addresses' preferred lifetimes are long enough, compared to other configured lifetimes, and at least 2 sec. - Support forwarding of ICMP Error messages in IPSec, per RFC 4301. - Add support for the independent control state machine for bonding per IEEE 802.1AX-2008 5.4.15 in addition to the existing coupled control state machine. - Add "network ID" to MCTP socket APIs to support hosts with multiple disjoint MCTP networks. - Re-use the mono_delivery_time skbuff bit for packets which user space wants to be sent at a specified time. Maintain the timing information while traversing veth links, bridge etc. - Take advantage of MSG_SPLICE_PAGES for RxRPC DATA and ACK packets. - Simplify many places iterating over netdevs by using an xarray instead of a hash table walk (hash table remains in place, for use on fastpaths). - Speed up scanning for expired routes by keeping a dedicated list. - Speed up "generic" XDP by trying harder to avoid large allocations. - Support attaching arbitrary metadata to netconsole messages. Things we sprinkled into general kernel code -------------------------------------------- - Enforce VM_IOREMAP flag and range in ioremap_page_range and introduce VM_SPARSE kind and vm_area_[un]map_pages (used by bpf_arena). - Rework selftest harness to enable the use of the full range of ksft exit code (pass, fail, skip, xfail, xpass). Netfilter --------- - Allow userspace to define a table that is exclusively owned by a daemon (via netlink socket aliveness) without auto-removing this table when the userspace program exits. Such table gets marked as orphaned and a restarting management daemon can re-attach/regain ownership. - Speed up element insertions to nftables' concatenated-ranges set type. Compact a few related data structures. BPF --- - Add BPF token support for delegating a subset of BPF subsystem functionality from privileged system-wide daemons such as systemd through special mount options for userns-bound BPF fs to a trusted & unprivileged application. - Introduce bpf_arena which is sparse shared memory region between BPF program and user space where structures inside the arena can have pointers to other areas of the arena, and pointers work seamlessly for both user-space programs and BPF programs. - Introduce may_goto instruction that is a contract between the verifier and the program. The verifier allows the program to loop assuming it's behaving well, but reserves the right to terminate it. - Extend the BPF verifier to enable static subprog calls in spin lock critical sections. - Support registration of struct_ops types from modules which helps projects like fuse-bpf that seeks to implement a new struct_ops type. - Add support for retrieval of cookies for perf/kprobe multi links. - Support arbitrary TCP SYN cookie generation / validation in the TC layer with BPF to allow creating SYN flood handling in BPF firewalls. - Add code generation to inline the bpf_kptr_xchg() helper which improves performance when stashing/popping the allocated BPF objects. Wireless -------- - Add SPP (signaling and payload protected) AMSDU support. - Support wider bandwidth OFDMA, as required for EHT operation. Driver API ---------- - Major overhaul of the Energy Efficient Ethernet internals to support new link modes (2.5GE, 5GE), share more code between drivers (especially those using phylib), and encourage more uniform behavior. Convert and clean up drivers. - Define an API for querying per netdev queue statistics from drivers. - IPSec: account in global stats for fully offloaded sessions. - Create a concept of Ethernet PHY Packages at the Device Tree level, to allow parameterizing the existing PHY package code. - Enable Rx hashing (RSS) on GTP protocol fields. Misc ---- - Improvements and refactoring all over networking selftests. - Create uniform module aliases for TC classifiers, actions, and packet schedulers to simplify creating modprobe policies. - Address all missing MODULE_DESCRIPTION() warnings in networking. - Extend the Netlink descriptions in YAML to cover message encapsulation or "Netlink polymorphism", where interpretation of nested attributes depends on link type, classifier type or some other "class type". Drivers ------- - Ethernet high-speed NICs: - Add a new driver for Marvell's Octeon PCI Endpoint NIC VF. - Intel (100G, ice, idpf): - support E825-C devices - nVidia/Mellanox: - support devices with one port and multiple PCIe links - Broadcom (bnxt): - support n-tuple filters - support configuring the RSS key - Wangxun (ngbe/txgbe): - implement irq_domain for TXGBE's sub-interrupts - Pensando/AMD: - support XDP - optimize queue submission and wakeup handling (+17% bps) - optimize struct layout, saving 28% of memory on queues - Ethernet NICs embedded and virtual: - Google cloud vNIC: - refactor driver to perform memory allocations for new queue config before stopping and freeing the old queue memory - Synopsys (stmmac): - obey queueMaxSDU and implement counters required by 802.1Qbv - Renesas (ravb): - support packet checksum offload - suspend to RAM and runtime PM support - Ethernet switches: - nVidia/Mellanox: - support for nexthop group statistics - Microchip: - ksz8: implement PHY loopback - add support for KSZ8567, a 7-port 10/100Mbps switch - PTP: - New driver for RENESAS FemtoClock3 Wireless clock generator. - Support OCP PTP cards designed and built by Adva. - CAN: - Support recvmsg() flags for own, local and remote traffic on CAN BCM sockets. - Support for esd GmbH PCIe/402 CAN device family. - m_can: - Rx/Tx submission coalescing - wake on frame Rx - WiFi: - Intel (iwlwifi): - enable signaling and payload protected A-MSDUs - support wider-bandwidth OFDMA - support for new devices - bump FW API to 89 for AX devices; 90 for BZ/SC devices - MediaTek (mt76): - mt7915: newer ADIE version support - mt7925: radio temperature sensor support - Qualcomm (ath11k): - support 6 GHz station power modes: Low Power Indoor (LPI), Standard Power) SP and Very Low Power (VLP) - QCA6390 & WCN6855: support 2 concurrent station interfaces - QCA2066 support - Qualcomm (ath12k): - refactoring in preparation for Multi-Link Operation (MLO) support - 1024 Block Ack window size support - firmware-2.bin support - support having multiple identical PCI devices (firmware needs to have ATH12K_FW_FEATURE_MULTI_QRTR_ID) - QCN9274: support split-PHY devices - WCN7850: enable Power Save Mode in station mode - WCN7850: P2P support - RealTek: - rtw88: support for more rtw8811cu and rtw8821cu devices - rtw89: support SCAN_RANDOM_SN and SET_SCAN_DWELL - rtlwifi: speed up USB firmware initialization - rtwl8xxxu: - RTL8188F: concurrent interface support - Channel Switch Announcement (CSA) support in AP mode - Broadcom (brcmfmac): - per-vendor feature support - per-vendor SAE password setup - DMI nvram filename quirk for ACEPC W5 Pro Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCAAdFiEE6jPA+I1ugmIBA4hXMUZtbf5SIrsFAmXv0mgACgkQMUZtbf5S IrtgMxAAuRd+WJW++SENr4KxIWhYO1q6Xcxnai43wrNkan9swD24icG8TYALt4f3 yoT6idQvWReAb5JNlh9rUQz8R7E0nJXlvEFn5MtJwcthx2C6wFo/XkJlddlRrT+j c2xGILwLjRhW65LaC0MZ2ECbEERkFz8xcGfK2SWzUgh6KYvPjcRfKFxugpM7xOQK P/Wnqhs4fVRS/Mj/bCcXcO+yhwC121Q3qVeQVjGS0AzEC65hAW87a/kc2BfgcegD EyI9R7mf6criQwX+0awubjfoIdr4oW/8oDVNvUDczkJkbaEVaLMQk9P5x/0XnnVS UHUchWXyI80Q8Rj12uN1/I0h3WtwNQnCRBuLSmtm6GLfCAwbLvp2nGWDnaXiqryW DVKUIHGvqPKjkOOMOVfSvfB3LvkS3xsFVVYiQBQCn0YSs/gtu4CoF2Nty9CiLPbK tTuxUnLdPDZDxU//l0VArZmP8p2JM7XQGJ+JH8GFH4SBTyBR23e0iyPSoyaxjnYn RReDnHMVsrS1i7GPhbqDJWn+uqMSs7N149i0XmmyeqwQHUVSJN3J2BApP2nCaDfy H2lTuYly5FfEezt61NvCE4qr/VsWeEjm1fYlFQ9dFn4pGn+HghyCpw+xD1ZN56DN lujemau5B3kk1UTtAT4ypPqvuqjkRFqpNV2LzsJSk/Js+hApw8Y= =oY52 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'net-next-6.9' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Jakub Kicinski: "Core & protocols: - Large effort by Eric to lower rtnl_lock pressure and remove locks: - Make commonly used parts of rtnetlink (address, route dumps etc) lockless, protected by RCU instead of rtnl_lock.
